The Shores Museum

A Living History Classroom:
The Society and Lyndon Institute have formed a partnership to make the Shores Museum a more vital part of the community and school. The museum will be used for living history classes, with hands on experience in computerizing historical records, mounting exhibits and landscaping the grounds. The Institute staff and the Society members work together to bring history to life.

A Gift to the Town:
Dr. Venila Shores, a long time history professor and author of a town history, deeded her home ot the town of Lyndon to be operated as a museum. Since her death in 1980 the town has asked the Society to operate the museum. A trust fund was set up with the town to help with the operation.

In 2002 Lyndon Institute (an independent high school located in the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont) entered a partnership with the Lyndon Historical Society. Students from the high school began to work at the town’s Shores Museum creating displays of town history while learning conservation and preservation techniques (see Caity Palmer's display and write up!). Students have also represented the community and school at the 2002,03 and 2004 Vermont History Exposition in Tunbridge Vermont with projects that represent a wide range of student interests.

In 2004 students used the Expo to continue the theme of community history by inviting fair goers to share their memories of the “game” the 100-year-old football rivalry between LI and St Johnsbury.
In the fall of 2005, students have begun to focus on the next phase of our community history project entitle “exit 23”: Lyndon before and after the building of the Interstate Highway.

During the winter of 2004 Lyndon Institute students in cooperation with the Lyndon Historical Societies Shore’s Museum began to select a project and collect historical data in three areas.

The history of the Lyndon Outing Club – Now one of the few remaining volunteer ski clubs in the state.

The “Game” – a celebration of the 100th playing of the LI Vs. St. Jay football game. A team of gifted Lyndon Institute students at the 2004 Tunbridge VT History Expo presented this aspect of the CHP (Community History Project)

Exit 23 – in the fall of 2005 and spring of 2006 students have been collecting pictures from a wide range of community sources documenting the changes to the Lyndonville area since the arrival of the Interstate in the 1970s.
